Getting help enrolling in Medi-Cal (and keeping it)

Most people who lose Medi-Cal do not lose it because they became ineligible. They lose it because a renewal packet went to an old address, a document was never uploaded, or a phone call was never returned. Enrollment help is mostly about closing those gaps.

Where you can apply

• Online through Covered California or BenefitsCal.
• By phone or in person through your county social services office.
• With free help from a certified enroller at a community clinic or community organization.

Documents to gather before you start

• Photo identification for the applicant.
• Proof of California residency, such as a lease, utility bill or a letter from a shelter.
• Income documentation: recent pay stubs, a benefits award letter, or a self-employment statement.
• Social Security numbers for household members who have them.
• Immigration documents if applicable. Note that Medi-Cal is available to eligible Californians regardless of immigration status in many cases, and applying does not require every household member to apply.

The four places applications die

1. 01Address changes. Update your address with the county the day you move, not at renewal.
2. 02Unreturned requests for information. These have short deadlines. Open every envelope.
3. 03Income reporting confusion for gig and cash work. Write a simple monthly statement rather than guessing.
4. 04Renewal packets. Mark the date and treat it like rent.

Ask about more than coverage

Once enrolled, ask your managed care plan about Enhanced Care Management and Community Supports. Coverage is the door; those are the services behind it.
