Where to donate a computer in Oakland and the East Bay

Most donated computers do not fail because they are old. They fail because nobody wiped them, nobody had a charger, or the battery was gone and no one said so. A few minutes of prep is the difference between a device that seats a student and a device that gets recycled.

What is actually reusable in 2026

• Laptops from roughly 2017 or newer with 8GB of RAM and an SSD — the sweet spot for coursework.
• Chromebooks still inside their auto-update window.
• Older laptops that can be converted to ChromeOS Flex or a lightweight Linux desktop.
• Chargers, docks, monitors, keyboards, mice, and USB headsets — always short, always needed.

• Hard to reuse: swollen batteries, cracked screens, machines with 4GB of soldered RAM, spinning hard drives only.
• Not reusable: anything still locked to a corporate MDM profile or an unknown iCloud/Windows account.

Before you hand it over

1. 01Copy off anything you want to keep — photos, tax documents, password exports.
2. 02Sign out of and deregister your accounts, then remove the device from your Apple, Google, or Microsoft account.
3. 03Ask the recipient in writing how they sanitize drives. A serious nonprofit will name a standard such as NIST 800-88.
4. 04Include the charger, and note anything broken. Honesty saves the technician an hour.

East Bay options

• Community nonprofits and digital-inclusion programs that refurbish and place devices with students — ours included; we arrange pickup across San Francisco and the East Bay.
• Certified e-waste recyclers for anything genuinely dead — look for R2 or e-Stewards certification, not a parking-lot pickup.
• Schools and community centers, though many can only take small numbers and current models.
